Awareness on OI

On Saturday, 8th February 2024, we had the incredible opportunity to be part of the vibrant and welcoming Harpenden Carnival, where we engaged with members of the public from across Hertfordshire and the London region to raise awareness about brittle bone disease (Osteogenesis Imperfecta – OI).

Our stall was more than just a space to share information—it became a hub of warmth, connection, and advocacy. We spoke with hundreds of individuals—children, families, local professionals, and curious passersby—educating them about what life with OI looks like, the challenges people with brittle bone face, and how the community can support ongoing efforts for inclusion, understanding, and research.

A Day of Impact and Inspiration

This was far more than a day out—it was a chance to change perceptions and build awareness around a rare condition that affects so many yet remains unfamiliar to the general public.

From interactive conversations to heartfelt moments, the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. People told us they were grateful to finally understand a condition they’d only vaguely heard of. Others were moved by the personal stories they heard and expressed a strong desire to help advocate, donate, and spread the word in their own networks.

Here’s What Some of Our Visitors Had to Say:

“I never realised brittle bone disease was so complex and lifelong. It’s inspiring to see people living with it being so strong and involved in raising awareness.”

“Speaking with your team helped me understand what someone in my own family might be going through. Thank you for making this information so accessible.”

“As someone with OI, it was comforting and empowering to see the condition represented so proudly at a public event. I didn’t feel alone today.”

These testimonials remind us why events like this matter. They provide education, visibility, and community support—all critical ingredients in improving the lives of those affected by OI.

Thank you to our incredible supporters.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who stopped by our stall—whether you asked questions, made a donation, shared your own experiences, or offered a kind word. Your support fuels our mission.

A heartfelt thank you to our fantastic team of volunteers and the OIF Network UK team. You showed up with energy, compassion, and dedication that made the event such a success. Your presence was truly the heartbeat of our work.

We are also incredibly grateful to our funders:

  • The National Lottery Community Fund
  • Awards for All

Your support not only made our participation possible but also gave us the resources to reach more people, create lasting impact, and continue to build momentum in our mission to support the OI community.

The Community Impact

Because of this event:

  • Over 300 people left with a deeper understanding of OI.
  • Families and individuals living with OI felt seen, heard, and valued.
  • New relationships were formed—with local authorities, educators, families, and allies.
  • We raised valuable funds that will go directly toward resources, advocacy, and support networks for people affected by OI.
  • In a world where rare conditions often go unnoticed, this visibility is a significant victory. Every person who walks away more informed becomes a new advocate in their community.

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning. We’re continuing our efforts to educate the public, support those living with brittle bone disease, and grow our network across the UK. With your support, we can do even more.

Be sure to check out the photos and videos from the event — they capture the energy, the smiles, and the powerful moments that made the day unforgettable.
