Today marks the official start of the “Stronger Together” Capacity Building Conference in Valencia, Spain—an inspiring international gathering organised by the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Federation Europe (OIFE). This event, taking place from September 5th to 8th, 2024, brings together an incredible community of leaders, staff, and volunteers from national OI organisations across Europe, Africa, and beyond.

With representatives from over 20 countries, including the Italian delegation and the OIFN (Osteogenesis Imperfecta Federation Nigeria), this conference truly reflects the power of global collaboration.

Why “Stronger Together”?

The theme of this year’s conference – Stronger Together – speaks to the very heart of the OI movement: unity, resilience, and collective impact. As the world becomes increasingly complex, so do the challenges faced by those living with rare diseases, such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta. It’s not enough to raise awareness—we need to build sustainable capacity within our organisations to offer practical, long-term support.

That’s where this event comes in.

OIFE’s primary goal is to equip its member organisations with the tools, strategies, and collaborative networks they need to continue making a difference in the lives of people with OI. Through workshops, knowledge exchange, case studies, and networking sessions, participants are gaining access to:

• Organisational development tools
• Best practices in advocacy, fundraising, and volunteer coordination
• Cross-border partnerships and cooperation
• Workshops on patient engagement and digital communication
• New insights from medical experts and researchers in the OI field

A Global Network of Support

For many organisations—especially smaller or newer national OI groups—this event is more than just a learning opportunity. It’s a lifeline of ideas, encouragement, and solidarity. From strategies on how to build and sustain support networks to sessions on lobbying for access to care, each moment is designed to strengthen our collective voice.

We’re especially proud of the OIFN delegation, whose presence reflects the growing importance of amplifying voices from across continents. Their participation brings much-needed perspectives from Africa and adds depth to the discussions about how support for OI can be adapted in diverse local contexts.

As the conference continues over the next few days, participants will continue to share their stories, learn from one another, and work toward a future where every person with OI—regardless of their location—can access the support, care, and community they deserve.
